MCB184 Honors supplemental info
I> | This information is in addition to the MCB184 syllabus; parts that override the 184 syllabus are indicated
A] | This course will focus primarily on developing problem-solving skills--identification of key questions, spotting salient information, evaluating sources, eliminating alternatives. In this usage, problem solving is distinct from classical "plug and chug" situations where the same approach is always used with different values.
B] | While biological content will feature where possible, the emphasis will be on situations amenable to quick mastery, and will therefore be abstract or non-biological in some cases
A] | The general expectation is that everyone will participate on a high level. This course credits as five units of Honors credit. Expect to earn it
B] | There will be a fair amount of summary/milestone based assessment, where students summarize the current state of projects and their insights
C] | In many cases, rubrics will be provided to guide students in terms of expectations
D] | Final grade for the (184H) course will be calculated by taking 20% contribution from Honors work with 80% contribution from 184 (lecture + lab) grade
E] | Assignments will generally be equally weighted unless indicated otherwise. The weighted average will be your 184Honors grade
F] | Their will be no final exam associated with the Honors component
G] | Generally 100 points on an assignment will be achieved only through exceptional insight, logical work, and/or organizational clarity. Unlike in many other courses, average work will actually get you a C or below
 IV> | Heightened expectations
A] | Earning honors credit will not focus on ingesting a greater quantity of material. Instead, you will be expected to be a vigorous and self-directed participant in discussion and in your own learning. This is not a suitable forum if you are looking for external motivation.
B] | You will be expected to think creatively and productively. You will be challenged (by definition, this means some exercises will be 'hard' and may entail some frustration en route). You will be expected to improve, and to observe your own improvement
A] | The structure of the course means that absences will disrupt not only your own learning, but that of the group you are currently working in. Attendance is therefore required
B] | Each unexcused absence will result in a 10 point decrease in your final Honors grade (1 letter grade)
C] | Two absences, excused or otherwise, and you may be advised to drop the Honors course and revert to MCB184
